How ‘Bout Dem Bears?
Men and Women Roundballers Sweep the Weekend

What a wonderful weekend it was to see Coach Drew’s charges demolish their third Big XII opponent, Iowa State, 91 to 73, while the Lady Bears were seizing sole possession of 2nd place with a 79-70 victory at Kansas State. The men’s victory coupled with victories over K-State and Mizzou as well as close calls against several other Big XII opponents proves that we are competitive now! Probation and youth notwithstanding the Bears are headed to the Big XII Tournament expecting to hang around a while.

The Ladies victory featured a typical All-American performance by Sophia Young. Sophia had 33 points, 13 rebounds and notched her 300th career steal as the Lady Bears easily handled K-State in Manhattan. Sophia already became the all-time leading rebounder in Big XII history and with 31 more points will become the all-time leading scorer in the Big XII. What a pleasure it has been for us to watch this fine young lady the past 4 years. We hope to watch her through April.

McDonald’s All-Americans˛

Baylor has never been successful in recruiting a men’s or women’s McDonald’s High School All-American basketball player. Streak over. We got two of them now. Demond “Tweety” Carter and Danielle Wilson both freshman to be at BU, were designated McDonald’s All-Americans on Friday. The future of BU B-Ball on the Brazos is mighty bright.

Academic Recruiting Setting Records Too

Its not just great student-athletes who are wanting to come to Baylor, it is just plain great students as well. By every measurement imaginable Baylor is proving to be a “hot” school. Applications, deposits, transfers and now a wait list of 631 students are all records of Biblical proportions (no pun intended). If word gets out about what a great product a major University with a clear Christian identity can be, someone might try to start a new one.

Alumnus runs for Judge

Baylor alumnus Brad Cates has entered the Republican primary race for the position of 414th District Court Judge of McLennan County, Texas. Cates’ father was an engineering professor at Baylor and the family is in its fourth generation of Baylor students. Cates and his wife both graduated from Baylor Law School and Cates has a private practice in which he has worked in family law. Cates says “we need judges that have core principles such as dedication to family, dependability and integrity.”

Adjusting to the times

Baylor is keeping up in a post 9-11 world. In January, President Bush announced a National Security Language Initiative, to encourage Americans to learn today’s “critical need languages,” including Arabic and Farsi. Before 2000, Baylor only had guest and part-time lecturers in the Middle Eastern studies department. Now we have a full-time Arabic language professor. Last year 120 students signed up for this class, and more were turned away. Fifteen students are now taking advantage of the new Middle Eastern studies minor. The department is looking at hiring more native speakers to field the growing interest in Middle Eastern culture.

President Lilley Inauguration

President John Lilley will be inaugurated as Baylor’s 13th President April 20-21st in Waco. That is not a lot of presidents given Baylor’s 161-year history. Wish all of our football coaches had achieved the same average tenure.
