Do You Love
?
We know that you love Baylor or you wouldn’t be a member of Friends
of Baylor. The question however is directed towards the usage
of the interlocking B & U that comprises the logo
.
Concern has developed that the
logo
has been placed on the endangered species list and petitions are flying
around with the intent of saving this sentimental symbol. Apparently
the issue arose over a strategic marketing decision to promote and emphasize
the BAYLOR mark wherever possible in preference to
. The
explanation further suggests that
won’t
be abolished, removed from sports apparel, etc. One fact, not subject
to dispute, is that those that love Baylor also love
.

Bears Scare National Champs
Watching 90,000 Longhorn fans sit in reverent silence while Baylor jumped
to an early lead on the defending National Champs was well worth the price
of admission last Saturday in Austin. Okay, so Texas came back and
won – they had to work hard for the victory and the Bears did just
fine in front of a large television audience. These Fightin’ Baylor
Bears are not through winning (note how well Colorado handled Tech and
K-State beat Oklahoma State). Kansas at Homecoming this weekend sure
has the look of another Bears win. A&M, Oklahoma (without Adrian
Peterson) and Oklahoma State are also doable. Keep your holiday schedules
flexible – there could be another ballgame in our future.
Fundraising Race
Baylor 2012 appropriately focused us on the necessity of raising significant funds to fuel our University’s ambitions. Sizeable donations are necessary not only for building projects such as the Science Building, Brooks College, Basketball Practice Facility, etc., but also to increase Baylor’s endowment. A much larger University endowment would relieve the pressure of our tuition driven financial model. Tier One Institutions Columbia, Harvard and Stanford have recently announced fundraising campaigns in the $5 billion range. (Click below). Baylor must look to not only its alumni base but to other individuals and foundations that are smitten with Baylor’s Christian mission. Fundraising is a stated priority of Dr. Lilley and obviously will be so for Baylor’s yet to be announced Chief Development Officer.
Baylor’s former Chief Development Officer, Dr. Richard Scott, will address the Steering Committee of Friends of Baylor this week on the challenges of this important effort. Baylor needs old and new friends alike as well as God’s blessings to achieve its goals. “Same old, same old “ won’t get it done.
Way-To-Go BU Baseball Coach Steve Smith!
It may be a little early to be talking about baseball but Coach Steve
Smith recently had his recruiting class rated #1 in the nation. Ain’t
that great! It’s tricky to land the #1 best recruiting class
in baseball for a rather unique reason – the Major League
professional draft. If a recruited player is nationally ranked, he
may well be drafted in the pro’s and never make it to campus. Congrats
Coach Smith! You are a great ambassador for Baylor in addition to
being a great coach.
Baylor Network Goes Way Hi-Tech
The Baylor Network, who has done a great job connecting the Baylor family through interesting and creative events is now pioneering internet networking with it’s inCircle program. An innovative interface system that allows Baylor alums to communicate with each other, inCircle looks to be genius. Congrats to Randy Lofgren, Brenda Morris, Kendall Cockrell and the professionals of the Baylor Network.
Harvard 2012?
Harvard University, founded 370 years ago to train Puritan ministers, may return to its roots and require all undergraduates to study religion. A faculty report suggests that students be required to take a course in “reason and faith.” (Click below to get the full story). A relief effort is being organized in Waco to supply much-needed bibles and Dr. Pepper to the Cambridge, Massachusetts campus.

Moonlight Madness Tips off Basketball Season

The Baylor men’s and women’s basketball teams officially began
their pre-season regimen at the Ferrell Center last Friday night. The
introduction of the teams, autograph sessions, dunk and 3-point contests,
etc. marked the “Chase Moonlight Madness” event. Now
how do we fit all the great women’s and men’s games into our
schedules? We may have the best combo of men’s and women’s
teams ever. Let’s check them out.
Congrats Baylor Regent Jay Allison
Former football great and Baylor Regent Jay Allison had his company, Comstock Resources, rated as one of the best small companies in the country. The prestigious list of companies was selected by Forbes magazine. Congrats and Sic’em Jay!
