God Bless the Baylor Bears and Shawn Bell

Football team covered in glory even in defeat

Shawn BellYou could not have asked for a better atmosphere nor game than that presented last Saturday night at Floyd Casey Stadium.  The SRO crowd, the weather and the meaningfulness of the game created a “big time college football” event that required on-site participation to fully appreciate.  The game itself was a masterpiece that was essentially error free, full of dramatic plays, and decidedly a draw until the last few ticks of the clock expired.

Shawn BellCoach Morriss and his staff clearly had the Bears ready to play the very talented Aggies.  Quarterback Shawn Bell had an exceptional outing in what quite possibly was his last game as a Baylor Bear.  Shawn re-entered the game once with a very severely injured knee only to be carried off the field a second time. Shawn Bell, the young man “they said” would never see playing time at Baylor, then would be “beat out” by every QB recruit who checked in on campus and who wasn’t “Big XII caliber” now owns essentially every Baylor passing record.  Shawn’s character, leadership and faith were worth more to his team than any other quarterback’s physical talent.  Shawn’s statistics will populate the back pages of the football program for some time but how he represented Baylor University will reside in our hearts for much longer. Without Shawn under center, no one knows what to expect in the last three games of the season.  But regardless, we have seen the future of Baylor football this year, and it is bright...very bright.

Thank you Coach Morriss and staff for the show last weekend.  Get well Shawn and thanks for the memories.

Friends of Baylor Welcomes Bill Robbins, Carroll Webb and Lance Byrd

Significant BU supporters join Steering Committee

Friends of Baylor is proud to announce the additions of William K. Robbins, Carroll Webb, Jr. and Lance R. Byrd to its Steering Committee.  All three gentlemen have a history of outstanding support and leadership for the University.

Bill Robbins holds an undergraduate and law degree from Baylor. Bill is Founder and CEO of North American Corporation, a significant international company headquartered in Houston.  A generous financial supporter of Baylor, Bill has received the President’s Society Award and is a member of the Old Main Society, Baylor Heritage Club and President’s Club.

Carroll Webb, a fixture at Baylor sporting events, is the former Managing Partner of the Dallas office of Deloitte & Touche, a charter member of Park Cities Baptist Church, former Chairman of the Audit Committee of the BGCT and a member of the prestigious Salesmanship Club of Dallas.  Carroll’s love for Baylor led him to Waco for retirement such that he could be more involved with the University.

Lance Byrd, Founder and President of Sendero Energy of Dallas, is considered one of Baylor’s most outstanding young business graduates. Mr. Byrd, the son of a Baptist Pastor, is a gracious supporter of the men’s football and basketball program as well as women’s basketball.  Coach Drew, Mulkey and Morriss will all attest to the difference Lance and his wife Lauren have made in their programs, particularly with several major locker room projects.

Friends of Baylor is honored to include these men in its efforts to support the University and Baylor 2012.

Time “finds religion” at Baylor

Last week’s edition of Time Magazine featured a cover story about what America will look like when it hits the 300 million population level.  Lots of bright economists, scientists, demographers, sociologists, etc., all mightily opined with their views on how the country will look, feel and believe.  When it got to the “believe” part, they looked to the Baylor Religion Survey for their predictions.  That’s right, even Time has to check in with God now and then and thanks to this Baylor 2012 driven research, the area code for the call is 254.

Women's SoccerCongrats to Lady Bears Soccer Team

For the first time since 2001 the Lady Bears Soccer team has qualified for the Big XII Tournament.  This also marks the first time a George Van Linder coached Baylor team has qualified although he did it regularly while coaching at SMU.  The tournament begins Wednesday in San Antonio.  Good luck and Sic’em Lady Bears.

Pray for Moseley Family

One of the most tragic events in the life of a campus is the loss of a student due to a car accident.  Katie Moseley, an 18-year-old freshman from Livingston, died Sunday in a highway accident.  Human words are incapable of denting the grief the Moseley family has incurred. Thankfully, God’s grace is sufficient and our prayers are for its abundance in the hearts of this Baylor family.
