Our hard working Baylor Regents have been particularly productive the
last several weeks with a governance makeover of the Board itself as
well as the election of Dr. John Lilley as the 13th President of Baylor.
The governance change will reduce the Board size from 36 members to 16
members by attrition (not filling vacancies as terms expire). It will
also more strictly limit the lengths of terms (ultimately 6 years) whereas
now some members have been on the Board for as long as 18 years. Most
public universities have very small boards and most private institutions
that use the larger model have an executive committee of the board that
effectively governs their school.
Dr. John Lilley’s candidacy for BU’s President was a well-kept
secret that ultimately led to his unanimous election. Previous finalists
for the job had been subjected to fairly intense public debate prior
to the Board’s final consideration, therefore the need for greater
confidentiality with Dr. Lilley.
Congratulations to Regent Bill Brian and his Search Committee for a
successful search and to Regents Committee Chair Jay Allison and his
troops for the long over due revamp of the Board. Welcome Dr. John Lilley
and his dynamic bride Gerrie!

Although we love to achieve national rankings for sports
and academics it’s even better for Baylor to be recognized for its distinctive
values. The Intercollegiate Studies Institute has ranked Baylor #6 in
the Nation for American values. No doubt another manifestation of the
appeal of Baylor 2012. Only one other Texas University, the University
of Dallas, made the list at #9. Thanks to LeRay & Rosemary Fowler
of Houston for noting this achievement.

The
joy continues! Coach Kim gave the ’05-’06 version of
the Lady Bears a “revival” sermon inspiring the Ladies to
overcome a 18 point second half deficit and charge to an impressive 84
to 72 victory before a national TV audience. Baylor continues to earn
great publicity dividends from this wonderful program’s success.

We love it Ladies!!!

Just when we were getting adjusted to this fall’s record freshman
class size as well as its academic credentials, along comes the fall ’06
pool of applicants and early indicators suggest an even greater demand
for Baylor spots next year. Applications, acceptances, and even deposits
are running way ahead of last years record pace. If the demand pressure
is sustained through the spring watch for Baylor to enroll its first
freshman class with an average SAT score in excess of 1200. Who said
that great Christian and academic credentials, coupled with world-class
research and teaching could not be supported by Baylor’s tuition
model? We have the hottest new higher education product in the market.

God
bless Coach Morriss and his fightin’ Baylor Bear football
team for the hope they restored in all of our hearts this year. We have
a REAL football team that can play with anyone and with a break or two
would have made it to a Bowl this year. Winning 3 road games, taking
Oklahoma and A&M (in their house!) to overtime, shutting down the
Tech offense better than any other team they played, and more importantly
making us look forward to every Saturday – great job men!
Let’s all show our appreciation this Saturday
when the Bears line up against the OSU Cowboys at 1:00 pm at Floyd
Casey Stadium. A good
crowd will insure that we will average over 40,000 per game for the season.
Don’t forget to check out Coach
Grant Teaff’s “I Believe” walkway
at the stadium – it’s fabulous! Friends of Baylor slogan “We
Believe” is in honor of Baylor’s greatest ambassador and Friends of Baylor spokesman, Coach Teaff.

Baptist journals suggest that Interim President Bill Underwood will
be offered the Presidency of Mercer University in Georgia. Bill has worked
tirelessly as Baylor’s Interim the last five months and is an important
asset as a master teacher at Baylor’s Law School. By any measurement
Bill’s departure would be Baylor’s loss and most certainly
Mercer’s gain. Our prayers are for a wise decision for Bill and
Lesli Underwood.

Chairman
of the Board of Regents Will Davis, Interim President Bill Underwood,
Chancellor Robert Sloan, Library Committee Chair Drayton McLane
and BU executive extraordinaire Tommy Lou Davis are all headed to D.C.
to present Baylor’s pitch for the Bush Presidential Library. Baylor
made the short list and thus represents a wonderful opportunity for Baylor
and Waco. President Bush’s interest in faith-based institutions
as well as the proximity to his Crawford ranch are considered advantages
to Baylor’s chances. Sic’em guys!
