RECRUITING NEWS POSITIVE ON ATHLETIC & SCHOLASTIC FRONTS

Outstanding athletes in several sports have committed to Baylor in recent days and overall applications for the fall '04 freshman class are on a record pace.  Coach Drew leads the good news in the announcement of the signings of Aaron Bruce and Mamadou Diene to the newly recharged basketball program.  These two young men are so highly regarded (and internationally ranked) that their signatures alone give Baylor the 34th best recruiting class in the nation according to HoopScoop.

Coach Mulkey-Robertson as well added two of the top eleven prospects in the state to the Lady Bears with the commitments of Chisa Ononiwu and Angela Tisdale.  Coach Smith filled in the slots of his nationally ranked Baseball program with five new signers, all of whom were highly coveted players.

Overall BU student recruitment for the fall '04 class is ahead of projections as measured by inquiries, applications and deposits.  This is great news for the University and an endeavor that we all need to continue to contribute to.

TUITION HIKES ARE NATIONAL PHENOMENON

The University of Texas regents voted yesterday to raise tuition 29 percent in order to afford the dramatically escalating costs of providing a competitive educational environment.  The New York Times pointed out last week that public and private colleges and university systems throughout the country are dealing with like kind percentage increases.  Baylor's relative value in this environment is very attractive.

THE LOSS OF A GREAT BEAR

The Baylor family lost one of its best and most faithful last week with the passing of Charles Cockrell.  Brother Cockrell, the long time pastor of First Baptist Garland and Baylor Trustee, loved and followed the Bears like few others ever have. As the designated prayer at all of the Dallas Baylor Bear Club functions of the late 80's and early 90's, we were convinced that our gridiron successes were in great part due to the effectiveness of his beseechments.  He will be missed but his supportive spirit will be well remembered.
