Coach Morriss announced late yesterday that former
BU All-Southwest Conference linebacker Gary Joe Kinne has joined the
staff as (what else?)
linebacker coach. Gary Joe was most recently the head coach at Canton
High School where he guided the Eagles to a school record 12 victories
and was named Adams USA National Head Coach of the Year.
Coach Kinne had to recover from a near fatal
gun shot wound last April to lead his team this fall. Gary was honored
by Baylor and inducted into
the Baylor Hall of Fame by Coach Teaff and Letterman Association Executive
Director, Walter Abercrombie at half-time of one of Canton’s games
this fall.
The entire Baylor nation is thrilled to welcome Gary Joe and his family
back to the Brazos. His heart, determination and strength of character
will serve our team and community well.

Sic’em Dr. Stephen Evans for winning the Charles J. Miller Christian
Scholar’s Award for 2005. Dr. Evans received this award for an
article he wrote for Christian Scholar’s Review. Dr. Evan’s
achievement is another crown for Vision 2012 and we congratulate him
for this great honor.

Baylor, honestly, weathered the last of its most
severe NCAA sanctions and took the court for the first time Wednesday
night against Texas Tech
in Lubbock. The scrappy Bears, without any pre-season tune-up games,
were totally competitive with Bobby Knight’s Red Raiders. The Bears
lead the contest well into the first half. Coach Drew had as many as
3 freshmen on the court at certain times. You can see the future Bear
fans and it doesn’t take long-range binoculars to do so. Support
these guys when they open at home on January 14 vs. OSU at 3:00 pm. They
are going to be fine.

Baylor’s own, Judge Don Willet ’88,
is running for re-election to the Texas Supreme Court. A former assistant
Attorney General in Texas,
Judge Willet was appointed to the states highest court by Governor Rick
Perry last year. Judge Willet in addition to his outstanding legal credentials
is a great supporter of Friends of Baylor. With the likes of Federal
Judge Priscilla Owen, Sid Fitzwater, Ed Kinkeade and Andy Hanen as well
as numerous state judges including Supreme Court Chief Justice Tom Phillips,
Baylor is well represented in the Judiciary. Their successes speak well
for both BU academic and character credentials.
The old “streak” ended at 30 straight wins and the new
one started with Lady Bears stompings of Texas and OSU this week.
It was particularly enjoyable to watch Coach Kim’s ladies play
so well against Texas at home last Saturday. The win over OSU was
impressive in a different way in that the Lady Bears only allowed
26 points and won by 31 points. That’s a pretty good statement
as well. The Lady Bears are currently ranked 5th in the nation. The
Lady Bears face Texas Tech this Sunday, January 15th in Lubbock at
2:00 pm.

High school guidance counselors and professional
educational counselors generally agree that Baylor has become a “hot” school for
graduating seniors. A rising academic reputation with a Christ centered
mission is attracting record admissions. Baylor has received 18,454 applications
(up 78% from last year’s record pace) for the fall ’06 freshman
class.
A wait list is soon to begin. How ‘bout that 2012???

IT HELPS BAYLOR AND IT’S “ALL
GOOD”!
