Happy New
Year!
Our hopes and prayers for you and your families, as well as our alma
mater, are that 2004 is a dynamic, constructive and blessed year
for all.

BU LOVE
OFFERING VERY LOVELY
Congrats to Richard Scott
and all of those involved with development at Baylor University for
a fabulous ’03 giving campaign. BU raised over
$45 million from in excess of 16,000 donors last year. 3,500 gifts
came from first time donors. This is the fourth highest level of
overall giving in BU’s history and the second highest total
of donor’s achieved. Total endowment for the University increased
34% to $662 million in just the last 9 months. Not bad for a poor
economy and even poorer media attention. An improving stock market
and football program may well further our efforts in ’04.

PROVOST
RECEIVES CCL LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Provost David Lyle Jeffrey has joined the ranks of distinguished
scholars, Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winners and acclaimed writers
who have received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Conference
on Christianity and Literature.
“He was chosen because, in a brilliant way, he meets all of
the criteria,” said Maurice Hunt, research professor, chair
of Baylor’s English department and a CCL board member. “He
richly deserves it for his many publications in the field.”

BAYLOR FACULTY RETURN FROM IRAQ
A delegation of 23 Baylor University professors returned to Texas
from Iraq on Dec. 23 with
tales of Iraqis’ jubilation over the capture of Saddam Hussein
and appreciation for Baylor’s support, as the country seeks
to rebuild its higher education system.
Dr. William Mitchell,
director of Baylor’s Center for International
Education, said the trip was a great experience, both as an opportunity
to assist Dohuk University and to see the Iraqi response to Saddam’s
capture, which was established as a Kurdish holiday.
Mitchell said Baylor organized the conference to help Iraqi higher
education officials begin to rebuild a modern university. The Baylor
workshops averaged 55-150 attendees, including Iraqi university presidents,
academics, politicians, military officials, and business and community
leaders.
