The Baylor Regents
at their May meeting elected Will Davis of Austin to be Chairman of the
Board. Will Davis is a highly regarded attorney
and former public official. In addition to being the former Vice Chairman
of the Texas Department of Education and the State Chairman of the Democratic
Party, Will holds the unusual distinction of completing a Baylor leadership “HAT
TRICK”. That is, he has been elected Student Body President, President
of the Alumni Association, and now Chairman of the Board of Regents.
If the Baptists had a Pope, Will would have a shot at hitting a grand
slam of BU titles.
Also elected as Regents were John Minton of East Texas, Albert Black
of Dallas, and FOB’s favorite son, Neal T. “Buddy” Jones
of Austin. John Minton is a nationally renowned trial attorney and a
former BU Regent. Albert Black is a well-regarded businessman in Dallas,
having founded his own business, On Target Supplies & Logistics.
Buddy is considered the premier governmental affairs consultant in Texas.
These three gentlemen are strong as horseradish, love Baylor and will
greatly expand Baylor’s influence. Congrats to Regent Walker Harman
and his committee that recruited such an outstanding “pledge class”.
Dean Brad Toben’s
spring graduates ranked first in the passing percentage of the Texas
Bar Examination, topping the other eight law
schools in the state. Baylor Law School expects this result every time
the Bar Exam is held and rarely fails to achieve it. Dean Toben (and
God bless John Eddie Williams and Walter Umphrey) have built a fabulous
Law School and program.
Net deposits for
next falls freshmen class are approximately 124 ahead of last
year’s
numbers. Average SAT scores for the class are up as well. Looks
like some families like where Baylor is headed
and imagine what we would do with a BU football bowl game!
Former BU gridiron great Mike
Singletary has recruited Robert Quiroga and John Garrett to the
Baltimore Ravens. Rumor has it
that with Mike mentoring they have a great chance of making the
team.

We will all miss the “Voice of Baylor”,
Frank Fallon. How great will it be, however, to hear his voice
announce our names
at the Pearly Gates.
