CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK
Just about every day this past week, somebody wearing a Baylor jersey was playing for a championship somewhere in America. Baylor men’s tennis played for the National Championship in College Station, Baylor women’s tennis star Zuzana Zemenova won the NCAA singles title in Athens, GA, the Baylor baseball team played Nebraska for the Big XII Tournament Championship in Oklahoma City, Olympic Gold Medalist Darold Williamson won the 400 meter NCAA Midwest Regional Championship event in record time in Norman, OK, the Baylor women’s softball team hosted the Super Regional Series at home and came within one game of reaching the College World Series, and Baylor men’s tennis star Benedikt Dorsch claimed the NCAA Singles Championship in College Station. Click here to get the full story on Zuzana and here to get the story on Benedikt.

In case you are a freshly minted new Baylor fan, this abundance of riches is not common for many schools much less ol’ BU. Somebody is doing something right at Baylor and from all of us fans “THANK YOU.” P.S. the Lady Bears of basketball are still National Champs! Sic’em!

CHANGING OF THE GUARD
This week marks the beginning of Professor Bill Underwood’s Interim Presidency as well as the last official day of Dr. Sloan’s Presidency. We pray for Professor Underwood’s leadership, wisdom for the Board of Regents as they continue the search process for the permanent President of Baylor, and to give thanks to Dr. Sloan for all of his contributions to Baylor. The Dallas Morning News chose the following excerpt from Dr. Sloan’s last commencement speech:

“I warn you today of a disturbing trend in the socio-political environments of the world.

I am referring to the growing public intolerance of the historic, even ordinary, particularities of the Christian faith. This growing social pressure is very real.

The message is clear. People of faith, including if not even especially Christians, are being cast in the role of extremists and zealots. The growing cultural consensus is that matters of faith are perhaps acceptable as long as they remain internal and private; but Christians must learn, or so these dominant voices seem to suggest, that their theological views and ethical priorities are outmoded and are the best matters of merely subjective religious opinion.

It is as if we are being told: go to your churches, sing your songs, pray, weep, read your Scriptures, even raise your hands if you must, but do not act as if your religious experiences really matter in the world after you leave your private, ceremonial enclaves.”

CONGRATS JEFF LEACH AND BECKY COOK (LEACH)
Not only is FOB Steering Committee Member Jeff Leach finally giving up his Student Body President title (after two years) but his bachelor status as well. Jeff and fiancée Becky Cook will wed this Friday in Dallas. Congrats to Jeff, Becky, and the Leach and Cook families – it’s a great Baylor merger.
