Chancellor Robert Sloan to Head Houston Baptist University

Robert SloanIt appears all but certain that BU Chancellor and former President Robert Sloan will accept the Presidency of Houston Baptist University this week.  He has been nominated by Houston Baptist University’s search committee to the full Board of Trustees for approval.  It is no surprise that another Christian institution of higher education would covet Dr. Sloan’s talents.  The Baylor family certainly appreciates the affirmation of Robert and Sue Sloan that this appointment represents but will greatly miss their presence on campus.  A former BU athlete, professor and seminary dean, Robert has had a lifetime of service to Baylor.  His most important contribution, Vision 2012, represents the strategic plan for the University.  In President John Lilley’s words, “Its breath and depth are such that it will serve as a guide for Baylor’s future.”

Baylor’s loss will hopefully be an expansion of God’s Kingdom through Houston Baptist University.  Thank you and Sic’em Robert and Sue.

It’s Football Season!

Coach Guy MorrissThe fighting Baylor Bear football team reported for practice yesterday in Waco.  Hopes are high on the Brazos that this team, which missed a bowl game by one missed kick last year, will build on last year’s successes and give the fans a winning season.  With eight players named to one pre-season all-star squad or another and a new wide-open offensive scheme installed, this could be a very exciting team.  “Meet the Bears Day” will be Saturday, August 19th at the stadium and Coach Morriss will address the Dallas fans on August 8th at 11:30 am at The InterContinental Hotel and the Houston fans on August 22 at 11:30 am at the Hilton Post Oak.  The main event is of course the nationally televised opener against TCU on September 3rd at 4:30 pm.  This game will be an important one for the program – support it!

Baylor-Ex, Kip Wells, Wins Debut Game with Texas Rangers

Kip WellsFormer Baylor pitcher, Kip Wells, provided a needed boost to the Texas Rangers in winning his first outing against Minnesota, 10-2.  Kip allowed only one run in five innings.  Kip had only been acquired from Pittsburgh 72 hours before his first start for the Rangers.  Its great to have a Baylorite to follow in the Metroplex and we look forward to his first home start.

Baylor Great Dave Campbell to be Honored

The Dallas All Sports Association will present the prestigious Field Scovell Award to Texas Football Magazine writer extraordinaire, Dave Campbell on September 12.  Dave has treated Baylor fans to classic coverage and prose on the Bears for 46 years.  It would be hard to follow Baylor sports without the “terrible swift sword” of his pen.  Congrats Dave!

Baylor Receives More Grant Money

Waco high schoolers who want to attend college are the beneficiaries of a U.S. Department of Education grant made to Baylor last week.  The grants are scheduled to run through 2012 and will total $11.4 million.  Speaking of 2012, Truell Hyde, Vice Provost for Research said, “This is just one more example of 2012 in action.  It fits our mission…. It’s not only good for Baylor, but also good for the community and region.”
