“FRIENDS OF BAYLOR” RALLIES ALUMNI AROUND PRESIDENT SLOAN

High-profile Baylor alumni emerge statewide

Waco, TX (Sept. 9, 2003)  – Friends of Baylor, an organization founded less than two weeks ago, has recruited a heavy hitting committee of Baylor alumni and supporters from across Texas who support Baylor President Robert Sloan and stand ready to defend him and the university against fractious forces.

“In less than one week, we have raised more than $300,000 to help educate the public about Baylor’s rich 150-year history, the great promise this university holds, and what our university can accomplish under the leadership of President Sloan,” said Clifton Robinson, President of Friends of Baylor.  “Hundreds of people have contacted us from around the state and nation, wanting to join Friends of Baylor and rally behind the university and President Sloan.”

“Friends of Baylor is not just a pep squad – we are a group of highly-active, highly-motivated Baylor alumni and students who are committed to supporting Baylor and its current leadership,” said Congressman Max Sandlin, a Friends of Baylor Steering Committee member.

“While a small number of people are garnering headlines by trying to undermine Baylor and its leadership during this challenging time, the truth is that Baylor University Regent Chairman Drayton McLane and President Sloan enjoy very strong support from the vast majority of students, faculty and alumni,” said Dary Stone, one of the group’s founders.

“An overwhelming number of Baylor faculty members have rallied in support of President Sloan, and leading academics from top-tier universities across the nation – Notre Dame, Harvard, Duke, and Yale to name a few – have praised the ‘innovative and principled’ leadership of Dr. Sloan,” Stone continued.

“Unfortunately, a few members of the Baylor Board of Regents and Faculty Senate have their own agendas, which they have chosen to pursue at the expense of Baylor University and its students,” said Stone. “The hundreds of members of Friends of Baylor have only one mission in mind: to do what’s right for Baylor University and the students it serves.”

“No longer will we sit back and be the silent majority.”
