Welcome Coach Art Briles!

Coach Art Briles A new era in Baylor football began at 5:30 pm today with the announcement of former University of Houston Coach Art Briles as the new Chief Executive of Baylor football. Coach Briles, a native Texan, brings with him a distinguished coaching record in the high school and college ranks. A winner of state championships at Stephenville High School, contributing architect to the high flyin’ Texas Tech offense, and four bowl games in his short tenure at the University of Houston speaks to the quality of Coach Briles’ leadership and competence. A former President of the Texas High School Coaches Association, Art is well established with coaching relationships throughout the state. Chicago Bear tackle and former Baylor great Fred Miller says, “Coach Briles will be great for recruiting in Texas.” Baylor icon, Coach Grant Teaff has a long relationship with Coach Briles and commented that Art’s integrity, Texas ties, faith and leadership make him a “great fit for Baylor.”

Many in the Baylor family were excited about the prospects of Baylor legend Mike Singletary as the coach. The Baylor family’s love and appreciation for all that Mike has meant to the University must be affirmed. Likewise, the excitement by Baylor fans and support of the appointment of Coach Briles is overwhelming. Baylor football can be great. Coach Briles “fits” Baylor. The Baylor family welcomes Coach Briles, congratulates Athletic Director Ian McCaw on his selection, and looks forward to our first outstanding recruiting announcement.

Special Holiday Request

Coach Morriss

As many of you know, Kyle Woods was rendered a quadriplegic while playing football for Baylor in 1979. At that time the University essentially did not have insurance to cover a disability such as Kyle suffered. Coach Grant Teaff refused to abandon Kyle, started a trust for his benefit and helped Kyle get into a home. Here, almost 30 years later, Coach Teaff and some of Kyle’s teammates, are still caring for Kyle and are building a home for Kyle that is handicap friendly and close to Kyle’s job at Mountainveiw College where he is a counselor for students with disabilities. Our friend, fellow Steering Committee member and Friends of Baylor spokesperson, Coach Teaff, needs help raising funds to complete Kyle’s home this year. Coach Teaff is borrowing $50,000 to finish the home and Friends of Baylor would like to extinguish this debt for him. Friends of Baylor helped kick off this project 3 years ago with a $15,000 donation. Please respond by e-mail to support@friendsofbaylor.com or call Cary Gray’s office at (713) 986-7157 if you feel a call to help. Thank you for all you do for Baylor.

Sic’em Kyle!
